Expect Great Things from God; Attempt Great Things for God!
Celebrating 30 Years of God’s Grace in Mission
“He said to them, ‘Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation!’” (Mark 16:15)
I am writing this letter as I look back on an event that took place exactly 30 years ago.
In September 1996, after completing three years of ministry as an associate pastor at Daegu Dongbu Church in South Korea, I joined Operation Mobilization Korea (OM Korea; OM International, om.org) as a missionary candidate sent out by my church. In October, I began a six-month missionary training program. Along with other missionary candidates, I received practical training in mission theory, evangelism, cross-cultural ministry, teamwork, and various other areas as part of OM Korea’s missionary training program.
In mid-October of that year, I also attended a mission conference for the Daegu region held at Samduk Church (Samduk.org). The keynote speaker was the Rev. Loren Cunningham, founder and president of Youth With A Mission (YWAM). After the evening service on the final day, I approached Missionary Cunningham and asked him to autograph a new Bible I had purchased for my upcoming mission trips. Along with his signature, he wrote, “Mark 16:15.”
For the past 30 years, this verse has served as the compass guiding the direction of my missionary journey and ministry. Personally, I have always cherished the meaning expressed in the NIV English wording of this verse: “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation!” This has also been the guiding force behind KIM Mission’s ministry over the past 16 years. Wherever God the Father delights in sending us, wherever the Holy Spirit—the Spirit of our Lord Jesus Christ—leads us, and wherever the gospel is needed, we have gone with joy. As a result, we have been privileged to visit and serve in more than 150 countries and mission fields around the world.
Though I am the chief of sinners and a profoundly inadequate servant, I have sought to carry out a ministry of “going into the world” throughout my 27 years of living in the United States, working in 17 different kinds of jobs. From working night and weekend shifts in hospital emergency rooms to serving as an entry-level Walmart employee, driving for Uber, teaching Korean language to young children, working alongside my wife as a babysitter, serving as a Chaplain in an Arizona state prison, and ministering as a U.S. Army Reserve and active-duty Chaplain, I have shared the love of Jesus and the gospel of the Kingdom of Heaven with countless people in an extraordinary variety of workplaces and settings.
For the past 30 years, I have faithfully documented and shared my missionary ministry through letters written and distributed approximately once a month. These letters for the 16 years are all preserved on our KIM Mission website, KIMMission.org.
Today, Sunday, October 11, 2026, as I look back on 30 years of missionary ministry, I once again humbly acknowledge that everything has been accomplished through God’s grace and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. With a grateful heart, I offer thanksgiving and glory to our Lord Jesus Christ, our Good Shepherd!
Another reason I have been able to continue this long journey without growing weary, and with joy, gratitude, and boldness, is you—each and every one of you, our beloved KIM Mission ministry partners. Your love, prayers, and faithful partnership have sustained and encouraged me throughout these years. I thank you from the depths of my heart!
1. Into a New World, Among New Environments and People
For the past 30 years, I have written an official missionary ministry letter approximately once a month. As a missionary, I consider this an essential responsibility and accountability toward my Lord and gospel partners who pray for me and support the ministry through their love, interest, and financial contributions. These letters are also one of the best means of maintaining close communication with my partners and keeping myself spiritually alert and accountable.
Those of you who have waited for my letters with love and interest and have read them faithfully over the years may have noticed that this time, more than two months have passed since my last ministry update on August 9 without another letter being sent. This has been an unusually long gap in my 30 years of missionary ministry. Several developments lay behind this interruption.
It has now been four years and seven months since I began serving as a Chaplain at a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical center in February 2022. I began my federal chaplaincy career in Baltimore, Maryland, and it has been three and a half years since I arrived at my current workplace, the VA Medical Center in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Over the past several months, I have continued to serve faithfully and gratefully in my assigned specialty unit as a Mental Health/Moral Injury Specialty Chaplain while also pursuing opportunities for promotion and further development in my ministry. An opportunity arose to compete for the position of Chief of Chaplain Service at my current facility. However, due to various changes in U.S. government policies and circumstances, the selection process was delayed for nearly two years. The final selection process took place last month, but I was not selected for the position.
As I received the news and spent time in prayer, I reaffirmed that God’s enduring calling for me is not necessarily to become an administrative leader, but rather to remain among patients, offering direct healing and compassionate care while sharing the hope of the gospel of the Kingdom of Heaven and the love of Jesus.
Honestly, given my age, I had hoped for a more physically comfortable administrative position. But God’s will for me was different: “Go into the world, among those who need love and the gospel, and remain there with them!”
I am grateful that I came to this realization very quickly. As I repented of my own human ambition and accepted the outcome, the peace and joy that the Holy Spirit graciously poured into my heart overflowed within me. Hallelujah!
At the same time, another thought arose in the hearts of both my wife and me: “Now is the time to embrace change, enter a new environment with a renewed attitude, and look forward to what God will do in a new chapter of our lives!”
And God immediately opened a new door for us. In less than a week, an opportunity appeared that matched all my qualifications and hopes while also offering a promotion. It was the Chillicothe VA Medical Center in Chillicothe, Ohio.
From submitting my application and completing the document review and interview to receiving the final decision, everything moved remarkably quickly. The entire process took less than two weeks, even though federal employees transferring to another state typically face a process that takes three to six months, and competition for promotion can be substantial.
Above all, the Chief Chaplain at Chillicothe VA demonstrated extraordinary Christian faith, love, and kindness in selecting and welcoming me. His gracious spirit was a tremendous encouragement to me.
The Chillicothe VA Medical Center is a relatively small hospital located about an hour south of Columbus, one of Ohio’s major cities. Its Chaplain Service has three Chaplains, including me, with an authorized staffing level of four. Upon transferring to this new position, I will be promoted from my current federal GS-11 grade to GS-12. My responsibility will be to serve as a Mental Health/Moral Injury Specialty Chaplain, my area of expertise, providing pastoral care to patients, their families, and hospital staff. In fact, the work itself will remain essentially the same as what I have been doing for the past four years.
By way of background, Ohio is located in the north-central region of the United States and experiences four distinct seasons, somewhat similar to Korea’s. According to the demographic figures I have reviewed, its population is approximately 85.1% White, 8.0% Black, and 0.5% Asian, including quite few Korean people in Columbus. Traditional White American culture and conservative Christian faith remain influential in the region.
Until now, the places where we have lived in the United States—California, Arizona, Texas, Baltimore, and Louisiana—have been primarily in the southern and southwestern parts of the country, with the exception of Baltimore. These communities have generally had relatively large Black and Latino populations and have been home to rich and complex cultural diversity. The new environment, people, cultural characteristics, and expressions of faith we will encounter in Ohio will be quite different from what we have known. I look forward to this new chapter with great anticipation.
I praise God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ, who love this unworthy servant and continue to send me into new environments and among new people, carrying the gospel and the love of Jesus.
Once again, I remember the ministry motto that has guided KIM Mission:
“Expect great things from God; attempt great things for God!” — William Carey
As of today, my transfer schedule has been confirmed. My final working day at the Shreveport VA Medical Center will be October 30, and my first working day at my new assignment at the Chillicothe VA Medical Center in Ohio will be November 16.
During the interim, I will take scheduled annual leave, and Joy and I are going to drive a U-Haul moving truck to relocate our belongings over three days, November 9–11. For the initial stage of our transition, we have rented an apartment close to my new workplace. We would be deeply grateful for your prayers for these upcoming arrangements, a safe journey, and a smooth transition into our new home and ministry.
2. Introducing a New Ministry Partner: Rev. Eui Y. Hong, Our Ministry Mentor
Another joyful and encouraging announcement is that KIM Mission has welcomed a very special pastor to serve as our Ministry Mentor: Rev. Eui Y. Hong.
My wife and I first met Pastor Hong nine years ago, in the fall of 2017. Recently, we reconnected when he began serving as a Chaplain at the VA Houston Medical Center in Texas.
Pastor Hong earned his Master of Divinity (M.Div.) from Talbot School of Theology, a well-known evangelical seminary in the Los Angeles area, and his Master of Theology (Th.M.) from Fuller Theological Seminary, specializing in spiritual warfare and inner healing. During his studies, he learned from Professor Charles Kraft and Professor Charles E. Van Engen, authorities in cross-cultural ministry and spiritual warfare whose works are represented in our Perspectives on the World Christian Movementcurriculum.
He also completed his studies in Family and Marriage Counseling and Community Care in Liberty University’s Ed.D. program in Virginia and is now approaching the completion and approval of his doctoral dissertation.
In his younger years, Pastor Hong enlisted in the U.S. Army as a Human Resources Specialist and served for two years at Osan Air Base in South Korea. His subsequent pastoral ministry included service at Oriental Mission Church in Los Angeles, Youngnak Church in Garden Grove, and Inland Church. Pastor Hong is an outstanding man in many respects. However, the most important reason we are welcoming him as a KIM Mission ministry partner is his remarkable and longstanding commitment to our ministry. Since we first met in Dallas in the fall of 2017, Pastor Hong has regularly visited the KIM Mission website I introduced to him at that time. He has faithfully read not only my monthly ministry letters but also most of the prayer letters I have written over the past decade and more. He has even watched and studied my YouTube video lectures on Perspectives on the World Christian Movement. Through all these years, he has participated in our missionary ministry with genuine love, concern, and prayer.
My wife and I have never forgotten Pastor Hong’s character and passion since our first meeting. Although we occasionally prayed for him and wondered how he was doing, we unfortunately failed to contact him personally or include him in the group emails we regularly sent to our KIM Mission ministry partners. Yet, throughout these years, Pastor Hong has continued to support KIM Mission with more love, interest, and prayerful commitment than we could have imagined. This time, he was the one who reached out to me first. His faithful partnership has been a tremendous encouragement and a beautiful reminder of God’s providence. As a minister of the gospel, Pastor Hong also served quietly and faithfully for more than a decade as a hospice specialty Chaplain with VITAS Healthcare System in Florida. Through God’s amazing love and providence, he was recently selected for a VA Chaplain position at the GS-12 level, succeeding in an exceptionally competitive process with nearly 50 applicants for each position. Hallelujah!
In the years ahead, we look forward to learning from Pastor Hong’s outstanding character, scholarship, and diverse ministry experience, especially his expertise in spiritual warfare and cultural perspectives. Whenever opportunities arise, we also hope to serve together in mission fields around the world. Please pray for Pastor Hong, his wife, and their children as they begin this new chapter of ministry as VA Chaplains.
Once my wife and I have settled in Ohio, we plan to arrange an online video gathering in which all our KIM Mission ministry partners will have an opportunity to participate. We look forward to reconnecting with everyone and sharing what God is doing in our lives and ministry.
May the grace and peace of the Triune God be with each and every one of you!
With gratitude and prayers,
Barnabas K. Kim

(Mark 16:15 He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation!”)
Expect great things from God; attempt great things for God!” (William Carey)
(Rev. Hong, Eui Y.)
Korean International MinistriesKIMMission.org
