Dear Partners in the Gospel of Jesus Christ,

Praise the precious Lamb of God, our Lord Jesus Christ!

Last Wednesday (June 17, 2026), I departed my VA hospital at 9:00 a.m. and returned around 4:00 p.m. after a full day of official travel to the VA Monroe Community-Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC), one of the three regional clinics under the jurisdiction of the VA Shreveport Medical Center. Driving a government-issued Hyundai Sonata Hybrid provided by the hospital, the trip took approximately two hours each way.

The purpose of this very first trip to Monroe, Louisiana was twofold. First, I wanted to meet the staff members at the Monroe Clinic (for Staff care) and discuss ways we could work together in the future for the Veterans. Second, I planned to visit two Veterans in the Monroe area whom I had previously met and who had expressed a desire to meet me again for spiritual counseling.

The VA Monroe Clinic serves Veterans scattered throughout northeastern Louisiana, from east of Shreveport all the way to the Mississippi River. About fifty employees work there, including physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers, and administrative staff. Most of them warmly welcomed me. According to several staff members, no Chaplain from the main hospital had ever visited the Monroe Clinic before. In particular, both the Administrative Director and the Senior Physician are Christians. They joyfully exclaimed, “At last, God’s hand has reached our clinic! We are so grateful and excited!” They even offered me a clean and quiet office located right next to the physician’s examination room.

The first Veteran I met was a female veteran, whom I will refer to as “S.” She served in the U.S. Air Force in the 1980s and deployed in the First Gulf War in the early 1990s. This Caucasian sister has suffered from PTSD and several other chronic medical conditions, and we first became acquainted about three years ago.

Every year, hundreds of patients are referred to me. Most are seen once or twice and are eventually discharged and forgotten. However, among them are 35 to 40 individuals whom I consider to be under my special care. For the past three and a half years, I have sent them inspirational text messages every two or three weeks. These are Veterans struggling with severe depression, suicidal thoughts, powerful addictions, and temptations to relapse—individuals who are determined to overcome their struggles and who desire help through their connection with a Chaplain-me!

S has been one of my most faithful patients. Not only does she consistently respond to my messages, but she also regularly shares updates about her life and struggles. As soon as she learned of my first trip to Monroe, she was the very first person to request an appointment.

As soon as she sat down, she asked, “Pastor Kim, please tell me about the faith you believe in.” I was stunned.

She explained that she had lived her entire life without any particular religion. Although she had attended one or two local churches that I had recommended, nothing had truly touched her heart. Then she asked, “How can I come to believe in the God you believe in?” At that moment, the Holy Spirit filled my heart with indescribable joy, gratitude, peace, boldness, and assurance. What followed was an hour-long, grace-filled presentation of the Gospel in the style of Evangelism Explosion. I began with Romans 10:17 saying, “Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” I explained then that faith begins with understanding two questions: Who is Jesus Christ? and What has He done for me? I shared that Jesus is even now standing at the door of her heart, knocking and desiring to come in. Finally, I explained that receiving Jesus Christ involves acknowledging one’s sinfulness, recognizing one’s inability to live without God, asking for forgiveness, and inviting Jesus into one’s life to become “my Lord and my God.”

To my amazement, S listened with unwavering attention throughout the entire hour. She received the message with eagerness, enthusiasm, and joy—like a dry sponge absorbing water. After explaining the meaning of the sinner’s prayer, I asked whether she would like to pray together. She bowed her head and placed her hands in mine. Holding her hands, I first prayed for the Holy Spirit’s presence. Then I led her in a prayer of repentance and receiving Christ (she repeated each word of the prayer) and finally concluded with a prayer of blessing over her new life in Christ. When we finished praying, her eyes were filled with tears, and her face shone with joy. I presented her with a large-print Bible and a copy of Our Daily Breaddevotional booklet. Hallelujah!

After our counseling session, we met again with the Clinic Director. In that meeting, S expressed her desire to be the very first participant in the Wednesday worship service that I hope to begin at the Monroe Clinic, urging us to start as soon as possible. The idea of establishing a regular Chapel Service at the Monroe Clinic was not something that could easily be proposed. Yet, with the enthusiastic support and encouragement of the administrator, physicians, nurses, social workers, and especially Ms. S herself, we discussed a plan whereby I would travel to Monroe once each month to lead worship in person, while the remaining weekly services would be conducted through VA Video Connect system. These services will be open not only to Veterans but also to hospital staff members who are available to participate.

I give all thanks and glory to God for allowing me, during my very first visit to this remote community clinic, to meet people who are spiritually thirsty and eager to worship. Please pray that the Lord will soon open the door for me to visit the other two regional clinics—VA Longview CBOC and Texarkana CBOC—so that this ministry may continue to expand and bear even more fruits for His Kingdom.

Thank you for your continued prayers and partnership in the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.

With gratitude and prayers,

Barnabas Kim, A humble servant of Jesus Christ

이번 출장의 목적지는, 우리 VA 병원 관할 하에 있는 3개의 지역병원 (three Community-Based Outpatient Clinics, CBOCs) 가운데 하나인 먼로 클리닉 (VA Monroe CBOC)이었습니다.

믿음이란 먼저, ‘예수님이 누구신가 Who Jesus Is? What He has done for me?’
