우리의 목자장이신 예수님께서 무더운 금년 여름 그 한 가운데를 지나고 있는 모든 복음의 동역자, 형제 자매님들과 함께 하시기를 간구합니다.
벌써 한 두 주일 전부터 우리 동역자님들에게 사역편지를 한번 보내야지 하다가, 오늘 갑자기 찾아온 오후의 한적한 막간에 몇자 적어보기로 마음을 먹었습니다. 최근들어 우리 병원 동료 채플린들이 휴가를 가면서 제가 맡은 정신병동 환자들 외에도 다른 병동 입원환자들을 추가로 방문하다 보니 마음에 여유가 좀 줄어들었고, 또한 금년 연말 어간으로 예상되는 승진과정을 앞두고 저에게 주어진 3개월 간의 “수퍼바이저 교육과정 Aspiring Supervisor’s Program” 수업까지 매주 이틀씩 듣다보니 분명 모두가 더 보람되고 희망스런 일들임에도 어느정도의 긴강감은 느껴지고 있습니다. 특히 매일, 매주 거의 반복되는 새로운 환자들과의 만남과 개개인에 맞춘 상담 및 그룹 캐어 과정을 통하여, 점점 전문화되는 지식과 익숙해지는 나 자신의 경험에 의존하지 않고 매 순간마다 나를 통해, 그리고 내가 전하는 하나님의 말씀을 바탕으로하는 대화와 성경공부와 채플 예배를 통하여 주 성령님께서 친히 내 앞에 앉은 환자들 한 사람 한 사람을 만나주시고 어루만져 주시기를 간구합니다. 나의 간절한 소망과 기도는, 나의 환자들이 여러 순서들을 통하여 나와 함께 노래를 부르고, 주기도문과 사도신경을 함께 기도하며, 또 내가 준비한 성경말씀을 소리내어 읽고 공부하는 동안, 심지어는 그 모든 순서가 마치고 난 뒤에도, 성령님께서 각 사람의 심령을 울리시고 깨우치시고 그 영혼 깊은 곳에 숨겨진 상처들을 어루만져 주시사, 그 나누어진 말씀이 생각나게 하시고 바로 그 개인에게 주어지는 말씀으로 믿어지게 하시면, 참으로 “크로 비밀한 일들”이 누구에게나, 그리고 언제 어디서나 순식간에 큰 권능으로 나타날 수 있음을 저는 믿습니다! 그래서 나의 설교시간, 성경공부시간, 찬양을 환자들과 함께 부르는 시간은 성령님께서 내 앞에 앉아있는 한 사람 한 사람을 직접 터치해 주시기를 간절히 기도하는 시간이기도 합니다 – “이는 힘으로 되지 아니하며, 능으로 되지 아니하고, 오직 나의 신으로 (성령님으로 말미암아) 되느니라!” (스가랴 4:6-7말씀)
킴미션 사역 15주년을 감사하며 준비하는 제72기 퍼스펙티브스 글로벌 크리스천 무브먼트 아마존 세미나: 오는 2026년 1월 17-26일로 예정된 아마존 세미나를 준비하면서, 우리 킴미션이 선교단체로서 사역을 시작한지 어느덧 만15년이 지났다는 것을 깨닫게 되었습니다. 2010년 가을에 제가 국제오엠 미주한인본부 사역을 마무리하면서 설립한 Korean International Ministries (KIM Mission)이 믿음으로 캘리포니아를 떠나 애리조나와 텍사스 광야 생활 10년 (2009년부터 14년간 미육군예비군+ 2011년부터 병원채플린 사역 + 2020년 미육군현역 채플린 1년 +2021년 애리조나 주립교도소 사역 1년), 그리고 미국의 심장부 백악관에서 50분 거리 볼티모어에서 2022년 시작한 첫 베테랑스 (VA) 병원 채플린 사역 (2022년 7월 연령제한으로 미육군 예비군 사역 종료), 그리고 2023년 현재의 VA 슈리포트로 전임하여 3년째 정착하기까지. 지나 온 15년 간을 돌아보면 진실로 하루하루가 하나님의 직접적인 간섭과 인도하심에 따라 움직인 긴박하고 역동적인 시간들이었습니다. 15년 동안 이사만 11차례나 하였고, 생활과 사역을 이어가기 위해 제가 선택하고 직접 경험한 직업의 종류 만해도 – 미군채플린 (예비군 및 현역), 일반병원채플린 (6개 병원, 주로 야간과 주말 비상근무), 군병원 채플린, 월마트 매장 직원 (9개월), 우버 택시 운전사 (2년), 한국어 가정교사 (6개월), 베이지시터 (쌍둥이 아기 돌보미 4년), 그리고 저의 본업인 선교사 사역으로 지난 15년 간 약 20여개 국을 방문하면서 30회 이상의 퍼스펙티브스 세미나를 인도하였으니 모든 것이 은혜, 은혜, 진실로 한없는 하나님의 은혜였습니다. 그리고 이 모든 여정에 사랑과 기도와 동역으로 함께 해 주신 우리 모든 킴미션의 동역자님들이 곁에 계셨기에 가능한 일들이었습니다. 할렐루야!
제72기 퍼스펙티브스 아마존 세미나: 오는 2026년 1월 17-26일에 아마존 마나우스시에서 200마일 떨어진 아마존 강 지류 강변 도시 꼬아리 (Coari)에서 열리게 될 세미나는 우리 킴미션 사역과 역사에 또 다른 장을 여는 계기가 될 줄로 기대합니다. 현재까지 확정된 동행자들 (주강사)은 저와 다른 두분, 부이사장 이순권 장로님 그리고 부이사장 윤수현 장로님 입니다. 그리고 아마존 한인 1.5세 출신으로 마나우스 지역에서 20여년 간 현지인 양성 신학교 사역을 해 오신 지덕진 박사님과 지 목사님이 설립한 “찾아가는 신학교”가 이번 세미나의 모든 준비과정과 선교 현지에서의 일정을 운영하시고, 한국어-영어-포르투갈어에 능통하신 지 목사님께서 함께 강의하시며 통역을 맡아 주실 것입니다. 제가 기대하는 것은, 이번 세미나 강의의 75퍼센트를 이순권 장로님과 윤수현 장로님이 직접 강의함으로써, 우리 킴미션이 그동안 추구해 온 평신도 전문인 강사들에 의한 퍼스펙티브스 세미나의 완성입니다. 그리고 이미 이번에 강의할 내용들을 준비하고 있습니다만, 만 10년 전인 지난 2015년 9월에 우리가 처음으로 아마존에 가서 세미나로 섬기던 것과 비교할 때, 그 동안 세월이 변하고 특히 지식전달의 기술이 발전되어, 이번 세미나를 위해서는 그동안 우리가 사용해 온 퍼스펙티브스 세미나 강의 요약교재 [세계 선교 핵심 관점] 내용 전체를 획기적인 인공지능 (AI) 기술인 챗GPT를 통해 영어로 번역할 수 있게 되었다는 것이 크게 달라진 점입니다. 그리고 이번에 현지인 교회 지도자들과 신학생들에게 강의할 모든 강의 내용은 다시 현지어인 포르투갈어로 번역하여 모든 수강자들이 더 쉽고 정확하게 강의를 듣고 이해할 수 있도록 하게 되었습니다.
이 새로운 인공지능 기술 (AI)은, 우리 킴미션의 웹사이트 (KIMMission.org)에도 큰 변화를 가져왔습니다. 킴미션 웹사이트 내용이 그동안 대부분 한글로 쓰여져서 외국인 동역자들과 웹사이트 방문자들은 읽을 수 가 없는 한계가 있었지만, 이제는 누구든지 우리 웹사이트에 올려진 사역소식 등 모든 글들을 인공지능을 통해 자신이 원하는 말로 번역해서 읽을 수가 있게 되었습니다. 그분들에게 그 수고까지 덜어드리기 위하여, 오늘 저의 사역소식도 영어로 번역되어 아래부분에 실었는데, 한글에서 영어로 번역하는데 단 16초가 소요되었습니다. 유투브에 올려진 저의 퍼스펙티브스 한국어 강의 영상들 역시 머지않아 인공지능을 이용하여 한글 자막을 추가하고, 또 머지않아 그 모든 내용을 영어로도 직접 들을 수 있게 될 것입니다. 이와같이 신기술을 활용한 획기적인 복음전파의 방법은 불과 25년 전에 우리가 새로운 천년, 곧 2000년도 새해를 맞이할 때만해도 전혀 예상할 수 없었던 일이었습니다. 다가오는 제72기 브라질 아마존 세미나를 통해 하나님의 위대한 목적이 이루어지도록 계속 기도해 주시기를 부탁드립니다. 다시한번 할렐루야, 주 하나님께 영광을 돌립니다!
동역자님 소식: 킴미션 사역멘토 김용식 목사님께서 새롭게 교회 사역을 시작하셨습니다.
지난 십 수년 간 브라질의 상빠울로에서 영광교회 담임 목사님으로 섬기신 김용식 목사님이 교회 사역을 마치신 후에는 미주장신대학교 박사원 교수로 브라질과 미국을 오가시며 사역하고 계셨는데, 금년 2월에 애리조나 피닉스에서 애리조나 선교교회를 새롭게 개척하셨습니다. 김용식 목사님은 오래 전 자신이 한인 이민 1.5세로 자라고 성장한 브라질 상빠울로 영광장로교회 담임 목사로 부임하기 전에 수년간 애리조나 피닉스에서 담임목사로 교회 사역을 하신적이 있으신데, 하나님께서 다시 애리조나로 인도하신 것입니다. 김 목사님은 미주장신대학교 박사원 교수사역도 병행하여 감당하시게 됩니다. 우리 모든 킴미션 동역자님들께서 기도해 주시기를 부탁드립니다.

Hallelujah, we praise the living God, the missionary God!
I pray that our Shepherd, Jesus Christ, will be with all the co-workers, brothers, and sisters in the gospel who are passing through the heat of this summer.
I’ve been thinking about sending a ministry letter to our co-workers for the past couple of weeks, and today, during an unexpected quiet afternoon, I decided to write this one. Recently, as my fellow hospital Chaplains went on vacation, I have been visiting additional inpatients from other wards besides the psychiatric patients I usually see. This has reduced my leisure time a bit. Moreover, I am attending a three-month “Aspiring Supervisor’s Program” class two days a week in preparation for the expected promotion process at the end of this year. Despite all these being rewarding and hopeful tasks, I do feel some degree of tension. Every day and every week, I meet new patients, provide counseling tailored to each individual, and lead group care sessions. Through these, I am gaining specialized knowledge and experience, but I always pray that the Holy Spirit will meet and touch each patient sitting before me through the conversations, Bible studies, and chapel worship based on the Word of God that I deliver. My earnest hope and prayer is that through singing hymns together, praying the Lord’s Prayer and the Apostle’s Creed, reading and studying the prepared Bible scriptures aloud, and even after all these sequences are finished, the Holy Spirit will move, awaken, and heal the wounded hearts of each person, reminding them of the shared Word and making them believe it is directly given to them, demonstrating that “great hidden things” can appear instantly with immense power to anyone, anywhere and anytime. Therefore, the times I preach, hold Bible studies, and sing praises with the patients are also times of fervent prayer for the Holy Spirit to touch each person in front of me directly – “Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,” says the Lord Almighty” (Zechariah 4:6-7).
Celebrating the 15th anniversary of KIM Mission and preparing for the 72nd Perspectives Global Christian Movement Amazon Seminar: In preparing for the Amazon seminar scheduled for January 17-26, 2026, I realized that it has been 15 years since I founded the Korean International Ministries (KIM Mission) after finishing my ministry at the Korean branch of OM International in the fall of 2010. These past 15 years included 10 years of wilderness living in Arizona and Texas (14 years in the Army Reserve starting in 2009 + hospital Chaplaincy since 2011 + 1 year as an active-duty Army chaplain in 2020 + 1 year in Arizona State Prison Chaplaincy in 2021), and starting from 2022, hospital Chaplaincy at the first Veterans Affairs (VA) hospital in Baltimore that was 50 minutes away from the White House (Army Reserve service ended in July 2022 due to age limit), and finally, relocating to the current VA Shreveport in 2023 and settling for the third year. Reflecting on the past 15 years, it has been a time of dynamic movement led by God’s direct intervention and guidance every day. We moved 11 times in 15 years, and I experienced various occupations to continue living and ministering, including Army Chaplain (Reserve and active-duty), general hospital (6 hospitals, mainly night and weekend emergency duty), military hospital Chaplain, Walmart store employee (9 months), Uber taxi driver (2 years), Korean home tutor (6 months), babysitter for twins (4 years), and missionary work as my main job, visiting about 20 countries and leading more than 30 Perspectives seminars in the past 15 years. All this was by grace, truly endless grace from God. And it was possible because of the love, prayers, and support of you all the co-workers of Kim Mission. Hallelujah!
72nd Perspectives Amazon Seminar: The seminar to be held from January 17-26, 2026, in Coari, a riverside city 200 miles from Manaus along the tributary of the Amazon River, will mark another significant milestone in the history of KIM Mission. So far, the confirmed companions (main speakers) are myself and two other faithful co-workers, Vice Chairman Elder (Dr.) Soonkwon Lee and Vice Chairman Elder Suhyun Yoon. Dr. Dukjin Ji, a 1.5 generation Korean-Brazilian who has been running a theological seminary as President in the Manaus area for over 20 years, and founded the “Traveling Seminary,” will manage all the preparatory processes and schedules at the mission site, and Pastor Ji, who is fluent in Korean, English, and Portuguese, will give lectures and interpret. I expect that 75% of the lectures at this time seminar will be conducted directly by Elder Soonkwon Lee and Elder Suhyun Yoon, completing the lay professional instructors’ Perspectives seminar pursued by KIM Mission. Moreover, although we have been preparing the lecture content, one significant change compared to our first seminar in Amazon in September 2015, 10 years ago, is that with the rapid advancement of information transfer technology, we now translate the entire Perspectives seminar lecture summary [Key Perspectives on World Missions Lecture Note] into English through the revolutionary AI technology, ChatGPT. Furthermore, all the lecture content prepared for local church leaders and seminary students will be translated into Portuguese for easier and more accurate understanding by all attendees.
This new AI technology has also brought significant changes to KIM Mission’s website (KIMMission.org). The website content has been mostly written in Korean, limiting its readability by foreign co-workers, prayer partners, and site visitors. Now, anyone can translate and read all the posted ministry news into their desired language through AI. To save them even more effort, today’s ministry updates also is translated into English and delivered simultaneously (just in 15 seconds). The Perspectives Korean lecture videos that I created 7 years ago uploaded on YouTube will soon have Korean subtitles added using AI, enabling people to listen to the entire content in English. Utilizing such innovative technologies for evangelism is something we could not have foreseen 25 years ago when welcoming the new millennium in 2000. Please continue to pray that through the upcoming 72nd Brazil Amazon Seminar, God’s great purpose will be achieved. Once again, Hallelujah, all glory to God!
*News from our co-worker: Pastor Dr. Yongshik Kim, the ministry mentor of Kim Mission, has started a new church ministry in Phoenix, AZ.
After serving as the senior pastor of Glory Church in São Paulo, Brazil, for several decades, Pastor Yongshik Kim has been traveling between Brazil and California, United States, working as a professor at the Doctoral School of the Presbyterian Theological Seminary in America. In February of this year, he newly established Arizona Mission Church in Phoenix, Arizona. Before being appointed as the senior pastor of Glory Presbyterian Church in São Paulo, where he grew up as a 1.5-generation Korean immigrant, Pastor Kim had served as the senior pastor of a church in Phoenix, Arizona, for several years. Now, God has led him back to Arizona. Dr. Kim will also continue balancing his responsibilities as a professor at the Doctoral School of the Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Southern California.
Congratulations to Pastor and Mrs. Kim on their new ministry. We kindly ask all our Kim Mission co-workers to keep them in your prayers.
