하나님의 은혜와 사랑, 그리고 동역자 여러분의 기도에 힘입어, 2026.1.17-26일 까지 진행된 제72기 퍼스펙티브스 월드 크리스천 무브먼트 브라질 아마존 세미나가 넘치는 은혜 가운데 잘 마쳤습니다. 이번 아마존 세미나를 한 마디로 표현한다면, 지금까지 진행된 수십번의 세미나 가운데 참석자들의 반응이 가장 뜨겁고 적극적이었다는 것입니다. 할렐루야! 

부흥하는 브라질교회

남미에서 가장 큰 나라인 브라질에서 오늘날 역사하시는 주 성령님의 놀라운 임재와 브라질 성도들과 교회지도자들의 복음에 대한 열정, 그리고 하나님 말씀에 대한 갈급함이 놀라웠습니다. 저는 지난 21년 전인 2005년 상빠울루에 가서 세미나를, 그리고 약10년 전인 2015년, 아마존 마에우스에 가서 세미나를 인도한 데 이어, 이번 세번째 브라질 방문은, 사랑하는 동역자 이순권 장로님 (Dr. Terry S. Lee) 그리고 윤수현 장로님 (Stephen Yoon)과 동행하여 아마존강의 또 다른 지역, 인구 6만 명의 꼬아리시Coari에 가서 세미나를 진행했습니다. 지난 20여년 간 브라질에서 주 성령님에 의해 일어나고 있는 복음의 역사, 그리고 부흥의 물결이 너무나 두드러지고 나 자신과 현재 한국교회를 비춰볼 때, 현재 부흥과 복음의 촛대는 브라질과 남미로 옮겨진 것으로 여겨집니다. 이는 브라질 교회가 얼마나 지식적으로 수준이 갖추어졌느냐를 따지며 그들보다 한국교회가 마치 앞서가는 것처럼 이야기하는 일부 시각에 경각심을 주는 요인이 되어야 합니다. 하나님의 나라는 말이나 지식 자랑에 있지 아니하고 (열정과 실천하는 헌신의) 능력에 있습니다 (고린도전서4:20절). 하나님께서는 비록 세상 지식이 부족하고 미련하게 보일지라도 순종하며 말씀 들고 세상 속으로 들어가는 전도자를 통하여 당신의 나라를 확장 성숙해 가시기 때문입니다. 저는 이번에 만난 아마존 지역 소도시 주의 종들에게서 1980년때까지 한국교회의 부흥을 이끌었던 목사님들의 열심과 간절함, 그리고 갈급함을 보았습니다. 우리가 10년 전에 가서 세미나를 진행했던 비슷한 강변 도시 마에우스 (Maeus, Amazonas)에서 느꼈던 분위기와 이번 세미나, 그리고 따로 시간을 내어 방문했던 강변마을 교회와 성도들 개개인에게서 느끼는 영적인 느낌이 사뭇 달랐습니다. 열정적인 찬양과 자연스레 소리가 높아지는 통성기도가 뜨거웠습니다. 말씀을 듣는 태도와 반응 역시 40-50년 전 한국교회의 갈급한 열심을 추억하게했습니다. 요즘은 한국이나 미주한인사회 어디를 가더라도 사람들이 부흥사경회 혹은 선교 세미나에 갈급함으로 모이지 않습니다. 이번 세미나에 오신 현지인 목사, 전도사, 그리고 평신도 성도님들은 비가 내리는 그 밤 길을 부부가 오토바이에 몸을 싣고 (어떤 부부는 아이들 한 두명까지 품에 안고), 그것도 하루 종일 직장에서 일을 하고 지친 몸으로 말씀을 배우기 위해 모여들었습니다. 그분들은 교재비, 식사비 등 세미나 진행을 위한 등록비도 기꺼이 지불하였다고 합니다. 저는 솔직히 제가 강의하는 대신, 그분들 한 사람 한 사람마다 간직하고 있을 예수님을 만난 개인 간증과 당장 겪고 있는 사역 속의 승리와 어려움에 대한 생생한 이야기를 듣고 싶었지만, 언어의 장벽과 제한된 시간으로 인해 그러지 못하는 것이 못내 안타깝고 미안했습니다. 누가 가르치는 자이며, 누가 배우는 자란 말입니까? 과연 누가 먼저 된 자이며, 누가 나중 된 자일까요? 나중된 자가 먼저되는 하나님 나라의 법칙을 겸손히 되새기게 하는 시간이었습니다.

빈틈없는 준비와 운영

우리를 초청하여 이번 세미나와 단기선교 일정 전체를 준비하고 동역해 주신 찾아가는 신학교 학장이신 지덕진 목사님 (Dr. Chi)의 섬세한 준비와 운영 그리고 강의 통역으로 우리는 모든 일정을 거의 100% 효과적이고 효율적으로 진행할 수가 있었습니다. 하나님께서 지덕진 목사님을 통해 창의적으로 진행 중인 이 신학교는 현지인 분교장 (Regional Deans) 목사님들과 그분들이 섬기는 교회의 사모님과 성도님들이 세미나 장소와 저녁 식사, 그리고 강의 전 찬양을 준비해 주었습니다. 우리는 학생들과 더불어 저녁 6시에 교회 친교실에서 브라질 스프와 빵으로 소박한 식사와 성도의 교제를 나누고 7시부터 10시가 넘도록 말씀을 나누었습니다.  마지막 목요일에는 시간의 부족함을 아쉬워하는 분들을 위해 오전 3시간, 오후 3시간 (여러 분들이 휴가를 내고 참석), 그리고 저녁 3시간, 종일강의를 진행하였는데, 한명 한명에게 수료증과 모든 강의노트와 슬라이드, 퍼스펙티브스 주교재 포르투갈어 전체 파일, 그리고 강의 녹화를 담은 UBS 를 선물로 드리고 아쉬운 이별의 정을 나누느라 밤11시 무렵에야 마쳤습니다. 그분들은 떠나려하지 않았습니다. 사진을 함께 찍고 작별의 포옹을 나누었습니다.  진실로 사랑과 은혜와 배움과 축복을 받은 것은 우리들 자신이었습니다. 개인적으로 저는 매말라있던 저를 그분들과의 만남을 통해 회복시켜 주신 주 하나님께 감사드립니다.   

탁월하고 자랑스런 동역자님들

무엇보다도 저는 이번 세미나에 우리 킴미션 부이사장으로 십 수년간 동역해 오며 준비해 오신 이순권 장로님과 윤수현 장로님께서 동행하셔서 기뻤습니다. 두 분은 정말 잘 준비되고 (강의 노트와 파워포인트 슬라이드 등) 훌륭한 강의와 간증과 섬김으로 모두에게 놀라운 은혜를 나누어주셨습니다. 두 장로님의 세상 경력 (미육군과 미공군/우주군을 30년 각각 이상 근무하고 대령으로 은퇴하신) 뿐만 아니라 강의와 간증 가운데 나타난 실력과 강의기술, 그리고 현지인들 속으로 들어가 섬기는 겸손한 인품이 모든 세미나 참가자들과 현지인들에게 그대로 전달되는 것을 보았습니다. 하나님 말씀을 너무나 사랑하여 지난 5년간 미국신학대학원 (M.Div 과정)의 졸업을 앞두고 있는 이순권 장로님은 그 동안 저와 수 많은 시간 함께 공부하며 대화를 나눠 온 기독교 변증론 (Christian Apologetics)과 영적전쟁 (Spiritual Warfare; Unseen Realm)을 강의했습니다. 원래는 수월하지 않은 주제들을 어찌나 열심히 준비하고 열정적으로 가르치는지 모든 참석자들이 장로님의 쉽고 고백적인 강의에 빠져들고 수많은 질문과 감사인사로 반응을 나타냈습니다. 윤수현 장로님 역시 맥스 루케이도 Max Lucado 목사님이 담임하는 샌 안토니오 오크힐스 교회 (Oak Hills Church) 시무장로로 섬기며 경험한 내공을 발휘했습니다. 미공군 특수부대와 우주군 창설에 (US Air Force & Space Force) 크게 기여한 대령 출신으로 전역 직후 부부가 함께 미대륙 산악지대를 8개월 간 트레킹으로 동서횡단하다가 이번 세미나에 합류한 그는 청중을 사로잡는 매너와 열정으로 퍼스펙티브스 주교재 7과 내용 (월드 크리스천 무브먼트 역사의 10시대들; 하나님의 선교 매커니즘 등)과 현대 교회 신자들의 성장 및 성숙한 제자와 평신도 리더로 성장하는 과정 및 그를 위한 교회 지도자들의 역할에 관해서 연구결과를 바탕으로 매우 실제적이고 교인양육에 적용할 수 있는 방안을 제시해 주었습니다. 지덕진 목사님의 친절한 도움과 완벽한 한국어 및 영어 (두 장로님은 모든 강의를 영어로 진행)를 포르투갈어로 통역하신 수고가 빛났습니다. 저희가 내심 염려한 것은 여러 시간을 혼자 통역해야 했던 지 목사님의 체력이었는데, 감사하게도 하나님께서는 바로 첫날 저녁부터 수강생 가운데 한 자매님, 곧 콜롬비아에서 그곳으로 시집을 온 현지 중학교 영어선생님인 끌라우디아 (Claudia) 자매님을 예비해 주셨습니다. 첫날 저녁 두번째 시간에 이 자매님이 스스로 자원하여 두 장로님의 영어강의를 포르투갈어로 통역하기 시작하였고, 기간 내내 많은 강의를 지 목사님과 나누어 통역하면서 자신이 먼저 크게 은혜받고 기뻐하였습니다. 그녀는 브라질인 남편과 더불어 그 교회 주일학교를 가르치는 또다른 브리스가와 아굴라 부부였습니다.

여행의 은혜, 교제의 시간들

세미나 시작 전 우리는 인구 300만의 아마존 중심 도시 마나우스에 도착하여 이틀을 지 목사님 댁에 머물렀습니다. 따뜻한 사랑과 배려로 섬겨주신 지 목사님과 사모님의 환대에 감사를 드립니다. 3일째 되는 날 이른 새벽에 부두로 나가 쾌속선을 타고 9-10시간을 달려 꼬아리로 이동하였는데, 아마존강은 우기를 맞아 강의 규모가 엄청나게 확장이 된 상태였는데, 사방에 물이 넘치고 강의 너비가 평균 5-20 킬로미터나 되어 거의 바다를 지나는 느낌이었습니다. 미국 각자의 집에서 휴스턴 국제공항 (IAH)에 만나 함께 출발, 갈때는 파나마시티를 거치고 올 때는 콜롬비아 수도 보고타 공항을 경유지로해서 돌아왔는데, 오가는 모든 여정은 하나님의 은혜로 대부분 순조로왔고 우리 세 사람은 많은 시간을 함께 하며 좋은 교제와 깊은 대화를 통해 서로에게서 많은 것을 배울 수 있는 기회를 가졌습니다. 특히 많은 여행 경험이 있으신 윤수현 장로님께서 출발지와 경유지 공항마다 우리가 쉬면서 여유있게 기다릴 수 있도록 다양한 공항 라운지 멤버쉽으로 초대해 주셔서 더 편안한 여행, 그리고 좋은 대화를 나눌 수 있었습니다.  단지 마지막 돌아오기 직전 2-3일간 텍사스와 루이지애나를 동서로 가로지르는 겨울 폭풍 눈보라와 한파가 몰아친 결과로, 셋이서 휴스턴공항에 함께 도착하여 이 장로님과 윤장로님은 댁이 텍사스 남부 샌안토니오 지역이어서 운전하여 갔으나, 저는 휴스턴-슈리포트 간 마지막 비행기가 취소되었습니다. 이 상황을 타개하기 위해 저는 사실 그 전 주말에 브라질에서 인터넷을 통하여 그레이하운드 버스표까지 구입하였으나, 그날과 그 다음 날까지 우리 집으로 가는 모든 항공편과 버스노선이 취소된 상태였습니다. 저는 최후의 수단으로 공항 안에서 여러 렌터카 회사를 다닌 끝에 감사하게도 든든하고 금방 공장에서 나온 SUV Chevy Blazer 를 한대 빌릴 수 있었고, 하나님이 예비하신, 출고된지 하루 밖에 되지 않은 그 새차를 몰고 5시간 만에 어둠이 깔리기 직전에 집에 무사히 도착할 수 있었습니다. 특히 집까지 오는 마지막 2시간은 여전히 얼어붙고 눈으로 덮인 시골길을 겨우겨우 헤치고 와야했지만 우리 주 예수님이 친히 운전대를 잡아주셨습니다. 할렐루야! 한인성도들과의 교제: 아마존 강변마을에서 5일 간의 세미나를 마치고 마나우스로 다시 나왔을때, 우리는 인구 200만 명의 도시 마나우스와 그 주변 지역에서 사역하시는 한인선교사 부부 15명을 초청하여 그 도시에서 최고급 브라질부풰식당Brazilian Buffet에서 저녁식사를 대접했습니다. 대부분 15년 이상 이곳에서 사역하신 여러 교단 소속의 베테랑 선교사님들이신데, 그 가운데 절반이상은 10년전 저와 팀이 현지인 세미나와 한인선교사 대상 세미나를 연이어서 인도할때 한인선교사 부부 세미나에 참석한 분들이었고, 특히 이 가운데 브라질에 이민오신 지 50년, 아마존 선교 사역만 30년째 하시는 김완기 선교사님 (브리스길라와 아굴라) 부부는 21년 전 제가 브라질 제1의 도시 상빠울루San Paulo에 가서 첫 브라질 한인 퍼스펙티브스 세미나를 진행 할때 아마존에서 그곳까지 부부가 함께 비행기로 날아와서 그 첫 세미나를 수료하신 분들이었습니다. 그런데 이곳 아마존 지역에서 사역하시는 선교사님들 대부분이 자녀들은 성장하여 세계 각처로 떠나가고, 처음 파송받은 후원교회들은 거의 다 끊어지고, 새로운 후원자(교회)들은 연결되지 않아 쉽지않은 여건에서 사역하고 계셨습니다. 그날 우리팀까지 다 해서 20명 분 식비를 킴미션 크레딧 카드로 결제 했는데 감사하게도 이번 단기선교 출발 전에 우리 킴미션 동역자님들이 선교사님들 대접하라며 보내주신 사랑의 헌금이 있었기에 기쁨으로 섬길 수 있었습니다. 이름없이 빛도 없이 큰 강을 가로지르고 정글을 드나들며 복음을 전하며, 현지 교회와 일꾼들을 양성하는 우리 선교사님들을 그렇게 밖에 섬기지 못함이 아쉽고 죄송했습니다. 

이 모든 상황을 미리 아시고 먼저 필요를 채워주신 주 성령님께, 그리고 그 성령님의 감동에 기쁨으로 반응하여 섬겨주신 우리 동역자님들에게 거듭 깊은 감사를 드립니다. 

한인교회 예배 그리고 브라질 문화

우리는 2026년1월25일, 주일 오전예배를 마나우스 유일의 한인교회 (은혜한인교회, 이성로 목사님)에서 드렸습니다. 한국기업 주재원, 유학생, 그리고 선교사님들이 교단교파를 초월하여 예배를 드리고 점심으로 따뜻한 김치찌개 식사로 우리를 환영하고 위로해 주었습니다. 그날 함께 예배드린 20명 남짓되는 이들 중에는 한국 성결교단 구약학의 거장 노세영 목사님 (Dr. Roh Seyoung, 전 서울신학대학교 총장)도 계셨습니다. 40여년 간 후학을 양성하신 후 이제는 미국 어스틴에 거주하시면서 아마존에 제자들이 세운 신학교, 그리고 미국과 여러 선교지를 순회하며 활발히 복음을 전하시는 분이십니다. 주일 예배 후 우리는 가까운 정글 탐험 및 원주민 인디오 문화 박물관을 다녀온 후, 떠나오기 전 마지막 저녁예배를 마나우스동산교회 (지덕진 목사님이 개척한 달동네 현지인교회, 현재 제자로 양육한 브라질 목사님과 지도자들에게 리더쉽을 넘겨주는 과정)에서 드렸습니다. 도착 직후인 1월18일 주일에도 그 교회에서 예배를 드렸는데 그 날은 제가 설교하였고, 25일 주일예배 설교는 이순권 장로님께서 하셨습니다. 예배 후 우리는 마나우스의 핫플레이스인 강변공원에 가서 산책을 하였습니다. 노천극장 등 곳곳에서 새벽이슬 같은 청년들이 모여 기타를 치며 찬양과 통성기도를 하고 있었습니다. 도시 전체가 화려하지는 않아도 깨끗하고 생기가 넘치며 사람들은 친근하고 무엇보다도 영적인 부흥의 기운이 감지되는 이 마나우스를 위해 기도하며 우리 마음에 담았습니다. 자정무렵 지덕진 목사님 댁을 출발하여 공항으로 향했습니다. 한 가지 특이한 브라질 기독교 문화: 거의 모든 브라질 교회는 주일 오전예배가 없고 저녁시간에 드립니다. 그래도 우리 한인교회는 여전히 주일오전 11시에. 할렐루야!

Dear Faithful Mission Partners in the Gospel,

Greetings to you in the precious name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

By the grace and love of God, and through the prayers of all of you who stand with us as mission partners, the 72nd Perspectives on the World Christian Movement Amazon Seminar in Brazil (January 17–26, 2026) has been completed in overflowing grace. If I were to summarize this Amazon seminar in one phrase, it would be that, among the dozens of seminars conducted so far, the response of the participants was the most passionate and enthusiastic. Hallelujah!

The Reviving Brazilian Church: In Brazil, the largest country in South America, we witnessed the amazing presence of the Holy Spirit at work today, the passion of Brazilian believers and church leaders for the gospel, and their deep hunger for the Word of God. Twenty-one years ago, in 2005, I led a seminar in São Paulo, and ten and a half years ago, in 2015, I conducted another seminar in Maués and Manaus, Amazonas. This time, on my third visit to Brazil, I traveled with my dear co-workers Elder Dr. Terry S. Lee) and Elder Stephen Yoon to another region along the Amazon River—the city of Coari, a town of Amazonas, with about 60,000 people—where we held this seminar.

Over the past two decades, the work of the Holy Spirit and the waves of revival taking place in Brazil have been so evident that, as I reflect on myself and the current Korean church, it seems that the lampstand of revival and the gospel have now shifted to Brazil and South America. This should serve as a wake-up call to those who evaluate the Brazilian church only by its academic level and assume that the Korean church is somehow ahead. The kingdom of God does not consist in words, talking or knowledge, but in power (1 Corinthians 4:20) — in passion and practical commitment. Even when worldly knowledge seems lacking, God expands and matures His kingdom through those who obey His Word and boldly go out into the world.

In the group of Servants of God I met in small Amazon towns, I saw the same zeal, earnestness, and spiritual hunger that exactly once characterized the Korean church pastors who led revival until the 1980s. The spiritual atmosphere we felt in the river town of Maués ten years ago was noticeably different from what we experienced this time in Coari, in the local churches, and among individual believers. The passionate praise and naturally rising voices in corporate prayer were fervent. Their attitude toward hearing the Word reminded me of the eager devotion of the Korean church forty or fifty years ago. Today, whether in Korea or among Korean communities in the U.S., people no longer gather with such hunger for revival meetings or mission seminars.

Local pastors, evangelists, and lay believers came to the seminar riding motorcycles through rainy nights—some couples even carrying one or two children—after working all day (as Tentmakers), simply to learn the Word. They willingly paid registration fees for materials and meals. Honestly, instead of lecturing, I wished I could have listened to each of their personal testimonies of meeting Jesus and the victories and struggles in their ministries. Sadly, due to language barriers and limited time, I could not, and I felt both sorry and regretful. Who, then, is really the teacher, and who is the learner? Who is first, and who is last? It was a humbling reminder of the kingdom principle that the last shall be first.

Thorough Preparation and Operation: Thanks to the meticulous preparation, coordination, and interpretation provided by Rev. Dr. Duk Jin Chi, president of the “Amazon Visiting Seminary” who invited us and partnered with us, we were able to conduct the entire seminar schedule almost 100% effectively and efficiently. Through his creative leadership, local regional deans, their wives, and church members prepared the venue, meals, and worship praise before each session. Every evening at 6 p.m., we shared simple and humble Brazilian soup and bread in the church fellowship hall, enjoying warm fellowship before beginning classes at 7 p.m., which continued past 10 p.m.

On the final Thursday, in response to those who wished for more time, we held an intensive full-day session: three hours in the morning, three in the afternoon (many took vacation days to attend), and three more in the evening. At the end, each participant received a certificate along with all lecture notes, slides, the full Portuguese Perspectives textbook files, and UBS drives containing recordings of the lectures. It was nearly 11 p.m. before we finished our farewell. They did not want to leave—there were photos, hugs, and heartfelt goodbyes. Truly, the ones who received the greatest love, grace, learning, and blessing were ourselves. Personally, I thank God for restoring my own spiritually dry heart through these encounters.

Outstanding and Proud Co-Workers: Above all, I was deeply grateful that Elders Dr. Lee and Yoon—who have served faithfully with Kim Mission for over 13 years as Vice Chairmen of the Board—were able to join this trip. Both were thoroughly prepared with lecture notes and PowerPoint presentations and shared excellent teaching, testimonies, and humble service that blessed everyone. Their distinguished careers (each having served over 30 years as colonels in the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force/Space Force) were evident, but even more impressive were their teaching skills, spiritual maturity, and humility as they served among the local people.

Elder Lee, who loves the Word of God deeply and is nearing completion of his M.Div. studies after five years of theological training, lectured on Christian Apologetics and Spiritual Warfare (The Unseen Realm)—topics we have studied and discussed together for many hours. Though not easy subjects, he prepared with great diligence and passion, and the participants were captivated by his clear, heartfelt teaching, responding with many questions and words of gratitude from the audience.

Elder Yoon, who serves as an elder at Oak Hills Church in San Antonio (pastored by Max Lucado who once was also a missionary to Brazil), drew from his rich experiences, including his key contributions to the U.S. Air Force Special Forces and the establishment of the U.S. Space Force. After retiring, he and his wife Thora trekked across the US mountains for eight months before joining this seminar. With engaging delivery and deep insight, he taught from Perspectives Lesson 7 (the Ten Epochs of World Christian Movement history and God’s missionary mechanism) and presented practical strategies for nurturing mature disciples and lay leaders in the church.

We were concerned about Dr. Chi’s stamina, as he had to interpret for many hours alone. But God graciously provided help from the very first evening. A sister named Claudia—an English teacher from Colombia who had married a Brazilian and moved to Coari—volunteered to translate two elders’ English lectures into Portuguese. Throughout the seminar she shared the interpretation load with Dr. Chi, receiving great awakening and grace herself. Together with her Brazilian husband, she serves faithfully in their church like a modern-day Priscilla and Aquila.

Grace in Travel and Fellowship: Before the seminar began, we arrived in Manaus, a city of three million, and stayed for two days at Dr. Chi’s home. We are deeply grateful for the warm hospitality shown by him and his wife. On the third day, we boarded a speedboat at dawn and traveled 9–10 hours to Coari. The Amazon River was in its rainy season, expanded to an enormous scale—5 to 20 kilometers wide in places—making the journey feel as though we were crossing a sea.

We met at Houston International Airport (IAH), flew via Panama City on the way there and Bogotá on the way back. All our travels were smooth by God’s grace, and we enjoyed meaningful fellowship and deep conversations. Elder Yoon’s extensive travel experience and airport lounge memberships made our journey more comfortable and restful.

However, during our return, a severe winter storm struck Texas and Louisiana. While Elders Lee and Yoon were able to drive their homes to San Antonio and College Station, my final flight from Houston to Shreveport was canceled. I had even purchased a Greyhound bus ticket as plan B while still in Brazil, but buses and flights were all canceled for two days. As a last resort, I managed to rent a car that the Lord prepared for me, a brand-new Chevy Blazer SUV—just one day out of the factory—and drove five hours home, arriving safely just before dark. The last two hours on icy rural roads were especially difficult, but our Lord Jesus truly held the steering wheel for me. Hallelujah!

Fellowship with Korean Missionaries: After completing five days of seminars, we returned to Manaus and hosted a dinner for fifteen Korean missionary couples serving in the region. These seasoned missionaries—most with over 15 years of service—face difficult realities: grown children scattered around the world, supporting churches that have discontinued support, and few new partners join from Korea. I paid it joyfully through Kim Mission funds, thanks to several supporters who had sent love offerings in advance for this very purpose. Though it was only a small, one-time gesture, we were thankful to be able to encourage these faithful Servants of God who labor quietly and sacrificially in the remote jungle region. We give thanks to the Holy Spirit who knew these needs in advance and to our Mission Partners who gladly responded in love.

Worship with the Korean Church and Brazilian Culture: On Sunday, January 25, 2026, we worshiped at the only Korean church in Manaus—Manaus Grace Korean Church (Pastor Sungro Lee). About twenty-five people, including Korean company workers, students, and Missionaries, gathered for worship and blessed us with warm fellowship and a delicious lunch of Korean kimchi stew. Among them was Dr. Roh Seyoung, renowned Old Testament scholar and former president of Seoul Theological University, now residing in Austin, TX and actively traveling and teaching in various mission fields.

Afterward we visited a jungle cultural museum and later joined an evening service at Manaus Garden Church, a local Brazilian church planted by Dr. Chi and now being transitioned to local leadership. I preached there on January 18, and Elder Lee preached on January 25. Later we walked along the new river park where young people gathered in small groups everywhere with guitars, singing praises and praying aloud. Though not glamorous, the city was vibrant, clean, and spiritually alive, and we prayed for Manaus as we left.

One more interesting aspect of Brazilian Christian culture: most Brazilian churches hold their main worship services on Sunday evenings rather than mornings—though our Korean church still meets at 11 a.m. Hallelujah!
