존귀하신 예수님의 이름으로 문안드리며 간단하게나마 사역 및 주요일정 업데이트를 해 드립니다.
우선 아래 첨부한 영문 편지 내용은, 제가 며칠 전에 주변 미국인 기도 동역자님들에게 보낸 사역 업데이트입니다. 참고하시기를 바래서 첨부합니다. 그 동안 가까운 저희 이웃 미국교회에 출석하고 또 금요일과 토요일에는 기회가 될 때마다 신실한 미국인 성도들이 모이는 성경공부 및 기도회 그룹 모임에 동참하면서 그분들과 교제하는 가운데 많은 것을 배우고 있는데, 1-2년 정도 가까와 진 분들이 저의 병원 사역과 킴 미션 사역, 특히 유튜브 비디오 강의에 관해 궁금해 하길래 현재 제가 하는 병원 사역을 약간 엿 볼수 있도록 병원에서 주로 이루어지는 일상적인 사역 가운데 한 두 사례를 소개하는 한편 유투브 사역 전개 현황도 알려 주었습니다. 많은 분들이 한국어를 이해하지 못해도 유투브를 방문하여 저의 강의 비디오들을 확인하면서 그 일을 지속하도록 격려하고 기도해 주십니다. 이번 영문 사역편지에도 많은 분들이 격려와 축복의 메시지를 담아 답신을 보내왔습니다. 모임이 있을 때든지 없을때든지 매우 친근한 교제가 이어지는 것이 광야와 같은 이곳 텍사스 생활에서 저희에게 큰 힘이 됩니다. 우리가 금요일 저녁에 참석하는 기도모임은 우리 집에서 약 40분 거리에 있는 중산층 60~70대 백인들 중심의 이웃 커뮤너티 구역모임과 같은 그룹인데 약 10여 가정 부부들이 모이며 대부분이 매우 신실하고 성숙한 그리스도인 부부들입니다. 그리고 토요일에 가끔씩 참석하는 모임은 우리 집에서 1시간 떨어진 곳으로, 킴 미션 사역멘토로도 동역하시는 토니 하트만 목사님 (성공회 목사, 미육군 채플린 30년 근속 후 전역) 가정에 모이는 10여명의 새신자/중동 이민자들 중심의 모임입니다. 동역자님들께서 참고하시라고 첨부합니다.
1. 유튜브 영상강의 계속 진행 중 – 현재 제56강까지 진행하였는데, <한국교회 역사에서 배우는 선교전략>이 이어지고 있습니다. 특히 지난 제53강에서 한국교회 최초 성경번역 역사를 소개하면서부터 시작한 최초 조선어 성경 원문 강독을 매 시간마다 강의 앞부분에 포함하고 있습니다. 만주 봉천(심양, 청나라 수도 성경) 지역에서 최초 조선어 성경을 번역 출판하신 스코틀랜드 장로교회와 스코틀랜드 성서공회 파송 선교사 존 로스 목사님이 조선인 청년선비들의 도움을 받아 1887년에 번역 출판한 [예수셩교젼셔]를 강독하면서 저는 이미 너무나도 익숙하게 알고 이해하면서 읽어오던 신약성경 말씀이 너무나도 새롭게 와닿는 것을 경험하였고, 우리의 조상들, 1895년 경에 예수님을 영접하고 고향 마을에 교회를 세운 저의 외증조부를 비롯한 최초의 조선인 성도들이 처음 신약성경을 접하고 그 성경을 그 당시 평상 언어로 읽으면서 느꼈던 복음에 대한 첫 인상 – 새로움, 어렵고 생소한 용어들, 그리고 그 생소함과 어려운 말들 속에 감추어지고 숨겨져있는 진리를 발견하는 기쁨 – 을 상상하게 되었습니다. 그러면서 내게 새롭고 감동적으로 와닿는 그 복음서를 오늘 날 복음 전도에 헌신한 동역자들에게도 나누고 싶어서 조금씩 영상에 담고 있습니다. 현재 마태복음 7장 (산상보훈)을 소개하고 있습니다. 시간이 나는대로 꼭 한번 영상을 보시기를 권합니다.
2. 킴 미션 미동부 지역 동역자님들을 방문하려는 계획을 세우고 있습니다.
제가 속한 미주한인예수교장로회 (미주예장, KAPC) 남부노회 가을 정기노회가 오는 10월7-9일 간 펜실베니아주와 뉴욕주 경계인 이어리(Erie)에서 열립니다. 저희는 이번 기회에 노회를 이틀간 참석 한 후 보스톤-뉴욕/뉴저지 지역을 여행하면서 오래 동안 만나지 못한 동역자님들을 방문하고 만나려고 합니다. 지난 달 애리조나 템피에서 보스턴으로 이사를 간 부이사장 강동철 집사님 가정과 뉴저지에 계시는 부이사장 이광현 장로님 가정 (그리고 하나님의 기업 JC Global Inc.) 은 이미 방문을 결정하였습니다. 두 분 외에도 뉴욕/뉴저지 지역에 계시는 여러 동역자님들 가운데 10월9일~12일(혹은13일까지 연장도 가능) 사이 저희와 만나기를 원하시는 분은 연락 주시기를 바랍니다. 아직 궤적인 하루하루 일정은 결정되지 않았고 앞으로 짜여지는 대로 알려드리겠습니다.
3. 샌안토니오 한인 여성 사역 (Korean Women’s Meeting in San Antonio)
아내 Joy 선교사가 수개월 전부터 섬기기 시작한 이곳 샌 안토니오 여성도님들과의 성경공부 및 기도모임이 이제 매주 수요일로 정착되어 약10여명 성도님들이 모이고 있습니다. 우리 킴 미션 기도이사회원이신 윤세범 장로님과 윤천경 권사님 내외분이 주축이 되어 오랫 동안 보살펴 오신 아주 귀한 성도들의 모임입니다. 제가 지난 2014-2016년 약 2년 반 동안 자원봉사 설교자로 섬기던 미국교회 (맥스 루케이도 목사님의) 오크 힐스교회 (Oak Hills Church) 한인그룹에 소속되었던 분들이 대부분입니다. 그 한인그룹에 담당 목사님이 더 이상 이어지지 못하여 흩어지게 되었는데, 수요일 마다 모여 함께 말씀과 기도로 교제하면서 믿지 않는 분들을 전도하는 일을 감당하게 된 것입니다. 내일 (6.18일) 에는 지난 해 이맘때 천국가신 고 서수현 권사님 (킴 미션 기도이사회원)의 1주기를 추도하는 추도예배로 모입니다.
4. 저는 지난 금요일저녁부터 오늘 아침까지 3일간 침례병원(Baptist Hospitals in San Antonio)을 위한 밤낮 주말 당직 근무를 하였고, 이어서 오늘 (월) 밤 당직 근무를 시작으로 미육군 예비군 연례 동원훈련 (US Army Reserve Annual Training)을 시작합니다. 오늘부터 28일 아침까지 12일간 연속 훈련인데, 저는 소속부대가 미육군메디컬센터(Brooke Army Medical Center, BAMC – 동시에 샌안토니오 전군통합메디컬센터, San Antonio Military Medical Center, SAMMC)인 관계로 2일 간 7일 간의 밤근무 (저녁7:30~아침7:30)와 3일 간의 낮 12시간 근무 (이틀 간의 휴식)로 이 훈련을 대체하는데 주로 응급실 트라우마 당직 채플린 (Trauma Duty Chaplain)으로서 일하게 됩니다. 이 기간 중에 주님께서 저와 병원과 이 샌 안토니오 주변지역까지 모두 지켜주시고 기회가 될 때마다 복음과 사랑으로 담대히, 그리고 주님 주시는 영적 권위로써 환자들과 그 가족들, 그리고 병원 스탭들을 잘 섬길 수 있도록 기도해 주시기를 부탁드립니다. *오늘 첫날 밤 당직근무를 마치고 내일 오전 잠시 휴식 한 후 낮시간에 서수현 권사님 추도예배에 참석하는 것입니다.
할렐루야! 우리가 서로 떨어져 있어 서로 다른 교회를 섬기며 다른 지역에서 다른 일을 하지만 항상 한 성령님 안에서 같은 마음과 같은 뜻을 품고 하나님 나라 확장과 성숙을 위해 동역할 수 있으니 어찌나 감사한지요. 여러분 한분 한분으로 인해 부족한 종은 항상 감사와 기쁨 속에 새 힘을 얻으며 제게 주어진 지극히 작은 기회와 시간에 최선을 다하여 우리 주 예수님을 전하고 있습니다. 감사합니다. 사랑합니다. (아래 영문 사역편지 이어집니다).

I wanted to show you my huge appreciation for your love and prayers. I also wanted to share with you our current ministry update that I wrote for my English prayer partners on June 13 2019.
God’s Grace and Mercy upon the Hospital Chaplain Ministries – The Power of Forgiveness
My hospital pastoral care and evangelism ministries as a Hospital Chaplain for the Baptist Hospitals in San Antonio as well as at the San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC/BAMC) have been abundantly blessed as the Lord continues to touch me with the Holy Spirit and compassion for the sick and wounded, particularly for the lost.
1. On last Saturday evening, I met with Alfonzo (name has been changed to comply with the HIPAA policy) at one of the Baptist Hospitals. Alfonzo, 38 years old, who once converted from Catholic to the Protestant, had attempted the very first suicide in his life because of his wife’s betrayal as well as his chronical illness (amputated a leg due to kidney failure, dialysis once a day, and heart problem due to hypertension/diabetes). However, he was miraculously resuscitated from three days of unresponsiveness and wanted to see a Chaplain while I was covering the weekend on-calls. Alfonso said to me in tears that he didn’t want to die because he loves his three daughters of fourteen, twelve and ten years old. I offered an empathic listening to his long and bitter stories of life and shared about the Power of Forgiveness (Rom. 5:8,9), the message I prepared for the two times of Sunday Chapel service at the hospital (his mobility didn’t allow him to attend the chapel service). As I explained the power of the love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ who died for us while we’re still sinners and even enemies against God, Alfonzo, such a poor and pure hearted person, was deeply touched by the Holy Spirit and repented his hatred and anger with his wife who still didn’t come back to him. I prayed for him, his three daughters by calling their names, and his wife to be touched by the Holy Spirit.
On the other day, Sunday morning, I wanted to visit him again but I saw he was sleeping so sweet. In the afternoon, Alfonzo requested a Chaplain’s visit again and I was still the only Chaplain during the weekend. He was so happy to see me again and said that he wanted to have a brief worship service with a Chaplain in his room because he got God’s answer to his long prayers! He said that he was able to sleep like a log after we met and prayed together. And his wife who already had a boyfriend, and their three daughters came to the ICU room to visit him on that Sunday morning. His wife told him that she won’t leave him but will take care of him. So he immediately forgave her and shared with them the message I shared on Saturday evening. He was so happy to see his daughters again because his wife didn’t want to bring them to the hospital until that day. * I am going to take another weekend on-call duty this weekend – from Friday, June 14 night through Monday, June 17 morning with a great expectation from God.
2. I worked at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC/SAMMC) for the 12-hour night shift Trauma ER Duty Chaplain on Tuesday, June 11 and another 12 hours daytime shift (07:30am-7:30pm) today, June 13, 2019. My Trauma On-call Duties in these days are voluntary works (without pay) that I volunteered to help my colleague Active Duty (Regular Army) Chaplains in the season of this very busy season (as well as shortage of Chaplains) of the Department of Ministry and Pastoral Care of BAMC. And the Lord pays me back with extraordinary opportunities of ministry – not only 7 Trauma Patients but also two beloved souls:
John was unresponsive when he was brought to the Trauma Bay after the MCC (Motor Cycle Collision) accident two weeks ago. This handsome Caucasian gentleman had suicidal ideation even before the accident due to the broken relationship with his girlfriend, more fundamentally the broken relationship with God – he was a very spiritual man until he left the Lord just after his high school. His life for almost 20 years after high school was a series of the failures. And this time, he finally wanted to go back to the Lord. John wanted to talk to a Chaplain in the midst of the physical pains and spiritual struggles and the Lord brought me and him together early morning at 02am. I first provided a very active and empathic listening to him for more than 40 minutes. And then I shared about the Power of Forgiveness with him. Again, the Holy Spirit touched him. He confessed that he is a sinner and lived against God and God’s love. I knelt at the bedside holding his hand and prayed with him, and asked Jesus Christ to forgive him and recover his joy of salvation again as His Lord and the Savior.
There was another great thing happened just after I left John’s room. As I went to the nurse station to greet to the Staff, a nurse approached me and said, “Chaplain, thank you so much. I was there in the room where you were taking care of the next bed patient of John. I was unintentionally hearing over the conversation between you and John and it was great! I was touched and reminded of my relationship with God as well as my relationship with others. Could you give me a hug?” Why not? I gave her a big hug and blessed her in His name!
3. My wife Joy’s Ministry for the Korean American Women in San Antonio: Joy wanted to say thank you to Rev. MacGregor, Senior Pastor of the Grace Covenant Church of Beeville, TX, who shared his unique ministry experience for the Korean women when he served in Korea as a US Army Chaplain, and encouraged Joy to continue the ministry for the Korean Women. Joy has been pouring a lot of her effort and prayers for the women’s group thus far and now they have 10-12 members gathering every Wednesday at the members’ home in rotation (sometimes at our home). About half of them were just church goers without understanding about the gospel properly because they are illiterate. However, now most of them clearly understand the core gospel and growing very fast in prayer life and relationships with the Lord as well as others. I am so thankful to the Lord for the opportunity He gave Joy as she was preparing her own ministry for years.

5. Coming Opportunities: I am going to have a 12-day long Annual Training (paid) that will be the last part of my Army Reserve Training of the FY 2019 (until the mid October) at the BAMC. This two weeks consecutive training is from Monday, June 17 through 28. I want you to pray for me whenever you remember me. * The full-time position (activation opportunity) at the BAMC seems to be closed now, even though the Chain of Command and I have been waiting for a while with a great expectation. I am not frustrated but am going to do all my best to serve the Lord, His people and the Gospel in where I am and with what I can do as a Reservist and a Volunteer Chaplain at the BAMC as well as at the Baptist Hospitals as a Associate Chaplain and a FULL TIME Missionary and Evangelist. The Lord has been so faithful to us in His provision for all our needs through His sincere co-workers – Hallelujah!
